WELLINGTON, New Zealand – This Scotch has been on the rocks for a century.

Five crates of Scotch whisky and two of brandy have been recovered by a team restoring an Antarctic hut used more than 100 years ago by famed polar explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Ice cracked some of the bottles that had been left there in 1909, but the restorers said Friday they are confident the five crates contain intact bottles “given liquid can be heard when the crates are moved.”

New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust team leader Al Fastier said the team thought there were two crates and were amazed to find five.

Current distillery owner, drinks group Whyte&Mackay, launched the bid to recover the Scotch whisky for samples to test and decide whether to relaunch the defunct spirit made by distiller McKinlay and Co.

Fastier said restoration workers found the crates under the hut’s floorboards in 2006, but they were too deeply embedded in ice to be dislodged.

ADELAIDE, Australia – A British broadcaster has been convicted of animal cruelty after two reality show contestants skinned, cooked and ate a rat during filming in Australia.

ITV Studios, producer of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” was fined 3,000 Australian dollars ($2,615) after pleading guilty Monday, the Australian RSPCA said Tuesday.

The RSPCA filed a complaint in December against show participants chef Gino D’Acampo and actor Stuart Manning who prepared the risotto-and-rat meal on the wilderness show late last year.

Animal activists said the rat squealed in apparent pain and took more than 90 seconds to die.

Molson Coors’ fourth-quarter profit rises on tax benefits, but worldwide volume falls

By The Associated Press

Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s fourth-quarter profit more than doubled because of favourable tax benefits even as it sold fewer beers, the international brewer (NYSE:TAP) said Tuesday.

Worldwide volume sold of the company’s beers, including Blue Moon and Coors Light, fell four per cent as people cut back on their purchases. Still, higher prices helped drive an 11 per cent rise in net sales to $820.8 million.

Shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange rose 69 cents to $42 in premarket trading. Molson Coors Canada shares listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TPX.B) closed Monday at C$43.85.

Montreal-and Denver-based Molson Coors has seen sales slip in its strongholds of Canada and Britain amid weak economies.
