Your best diet? It might be in your genes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Can’t lose weight on a low-fat diet? Maybe you need to cut carbs instead, and a new genetic test may point the way, maker Interleukin Genetics Inc reported on Wednesday.

The small study of about 140 overweight or obese women showed that those on diets “appropriate” for their genetic makeup lost more weight than those on less appropriate diets, researchers told an American Heart Association meeting.

Singapore sticks to ban on chewing gum

SINGAPORE (AFP) – Singapore on Thursday stuck to its 18-year ban on the import and sale of chewing gum, which has become an international symbol of the city-state’s image as a strict society.

“The government stands by its decision to ban chewing gum,” Maliki Osman, parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of National Development, told parliament.

Brazil officials say 310 stricken by food poisoning on cruise ship in Brazil

SAO PAULO, Brazil – An international cruise ship was placed under quarantine in southeastern Brazil after hundreds of passengers were stricken with vomiting and diarrhea, health authorities said Thursday

At last 310 people suffered “some kind of food poisoning aboard” the Vision of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International, a spokeswoman for the National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance said. She spoke on condition of anonymity, in line with department policy.

Dave Houseman has all the ingredients to success — and he plans on using them to be hailed the best pizza-maker on the planet.

The Edmonton businessman is set to compete Thursday in the International Pizza Challenge in Las Vegas.

“It feels pretty good,” said Houseman, who owns Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria at 14123 23 Ave.

“It’s kinda crazy because it all happened so fast.”

Houseman, 30, will compete in the traditional category against contenders from across the globe.
