April 26, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

No one ever got sick from avoiding cigarettes or trans fats. But some of the most commonly repeated pieces of advice actually aren’t meant for everyone. After all, the USDA couldn’t equip its pyramid with a section just for people with celiac disease or those taking certain meds. Health recommendations are sometimes based on studies that didn’t include a good cross section of the general public. So we took a look at some pieces of conventional wisdom that are truly wise for most people and asked the experts what you ought to do, just in case you’re not completely average in every way.

Do what with honey?

April 25, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

“Hi, honey!” That happy greeting may also apply to the yellow-capped squeezie bear in your pantry, since the contents are good for so much more than sweetening tea. Honey is a natural antiseptic, moisturizer and, thanks to all its antioxidants, an age-fighter too.

“The high concentration of sugars gives honey germ-killing power, which is why it’s been used for thousands of years to encourage wound healing,” says New York City dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD, our RealAge skin expert. Honey’s thick, sticky consistency also makes it a natural protective salve, sealing out infection and creating a moist healing environment within. Use it in a pinch, Wechsler suggests, if you develop blisters on a camping trip and remembered your honey packets but forgot the Neosporin.

What Lurks in a Baskin-Robbins Sundae?

April 24, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Is there anything more innocent-sounding than an “ice cream sundae”? Doesn’t it sound like just the kind of wholesome fun grandpa took you out for after the Little League game? A few scoops of ice cream, a few pieces of banana and nuts, and maybe a drizzle of chocolate syrup—what could be better?

Worst cereals and the alternatives

April 23, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Let’s face it: We’re rushed. Especially in the morning. Often we’re running out the door a few minutes behind schedule as we stuff our bags and pray that we haven’t left anything behind. (Did I pack my lunch? My gym clothes? Do I have that file I’m supposed to give to Roger? Wait! My pants!) Yeah, mornings are messy, which is why breakfast is so often placed on the back burner. The problem is we sometimes forget to ever turn that burner on.

Frozen lasagna taste-test winners

April 21, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

I just got off the phone with an employee of a New York City Whole Foods. I called to confirm some prices mentioned in this post. When I said, “I’m calling about frozen lasagna,” the employee said, “Mmm, frozen lasagna, that sounds so good.” I thought, “It does? Weird.”

Frozen lasagna is a savior to many busy home cooks–especially home cooks with a family to feed–and for that reason, most people have held a special place for it in their heart since childhood.

School lunches a national security threat?

April 21, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

WASHINGTON – School lunches have been called many things, but a group of retired military officers is giving them a new label: national security threat.

That’s not a reference to the mystery meat served up in the cafeteria line either. The retired officers are saying that school lunches have helped make the nation’s young people so fat that fewer of them can meet the military’s physical fitness standards, and recruitment is in jeopardy.
