May 14, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

George Prochnik’s recent piece in The Daily Beast explores the science behind restaurants’ loud music, booming echos, and clattering tables–or as I like to call those things, “Why I’m still hoarse after a night out despite the fact that I don’t smoke anymore.”

Many of us seem to operate on one speed—overdrive! And that habit has carried over to our food habits, too: Fifty-nine percent of women eat on the go, according to a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Those who eat while driving, working or otherwise occupied, tend to fill up more on fast food. While you can hit the insta-burger joint occasionally without gaining, those who indulge in fast food more than twice a week tend to be 10 pounds heavier than those who eat it sparingly, according to a study in The Lancet, which puts them at greater risk for diabetes.

Tim Hortons Inc. (TSX:THI) chief executive Don Schroeder is optimistic that a good year for Columbian coffee crops could mean the price of your morning cup of joe will hold steady for the foreseeable future.

Price jump for a popular seafood item

May 14, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Henry Demone of High Liner Foods Inc. (TSX:HLF) said during a conference call Wednesday that there’s been an international shortage of fresh shrimp supply since the catastrophe.

“Buyers are out on the market trying to replace that supply and that’s led to higher shrimp prices,” he said, while answering a question from research analyst Carolyn Dennis. Demone said that the reduced supply of fresh shrimp from the Gulf is being replaced by farmed shrimp worldwide, and that has tightened overall supply.
