For a mere $2, reports USA Today, fast-food fans can get a taco or burrito, a soda pop, and chips at Taco Bell, starting this Sunday.

That’s a buck less than a threesome from McDonald’s dollar menu, and the latest you-want-cheese-with-that volley in the recessionary fast-food battles. The paper also points out places like T.G.I.F., Denny’s, and Pizza Hut have whipped up cheap eats to lure peckish penny-pinchers.

Unhealthiest juices at the market

Think of your all-time favorite rock song: Hey Jude, London Calling, Smells Like Teen Spirit, whatever. Now imagine that the next time you crank it up, all the guitar riffs will be replaced by violins. Kinda weak, right?

Well that’s akin to what happens when you turn a fruit into fruit juice: You still have the flavor, but you don’t have the grit, the substance, the power. Even the very best fruit juice isn’t as nutritious as the fruit it originally came from, because the fiber that makes a piece of fruit so filling has been stripped away: Instead of filling your belly like an apple or an orange, juice just passes through your gastrointestinal tract like a little stream of sugar. It’s like listening to “Hey Jude” without the “Na-na-na na” part at the end. The sweet melody is intact, but the soul is lost. So as a rule, always choose the original version (that would be the fruit) over the Muzak version (that would be the juice).

Junk food alters brain

May 15, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Compulsive eating of rich food triggers some of the same addiction-like responses in the brain as heroin, a study on rats suggests.

When U.S. researchers offered rats high-calorie foods such as bacon, sausage, cake and chocolate on top of their healthier but less appetizing chow, the animals overconsumed calories, quickly gained weight and continued to overeat — even when they knew they’d receive an unpleasant electric shock.

Going nuts in your diet can be good for your health, according to a study published Monday, which showed that eating nuts helps to lower blood cholesterol levels.

People who ate an average of 67 grams (2.4 ounces) of nuts a day saw a 5.1 percent fall in total cholesterol concentration and a 7.4 percent drop in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) — sometimes referred to as bad cholesterol — concentration compared to no-nut eaters, the study showed.
