Open Sesame

Ali Baba is a fictional character from the Arabian tale ‘Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.’ One day while working in the forest he observed the “forty thieves” entering their secret cave where all of their purloined treasure was stashed. To open the cave they must utter the secret words: “Open Sesame.” Ali Baba returns at a later point in time and pilfers some of the riches. This sets into motion a cascade of violence whereby Ali Baba’s brother, and all but the leader of the thieves are slain. In the perfidious denouement, the final thief is murdered and Ali Baba and his cohorts all live happily ever after.

Caffeine is one of the 2 most widely used psychoactive drugs on earth (the other being alcohol). Psychoactive means that it has an effect on your psychological functioning (in addition to a number of physical effects). One of the primary effects is to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, which governs the stress response. This produces anger, fear, anxiety, increased heart rate and blood pressure, tremour, a jittery feeling, rapid or shallow breathing, change in pain sensitivity, and dozens of other changes.

Whoever invented bottled water was a genius. Think about it: They took a widely available and nearly free commodity, packaged it nice and pretty, and sold it for hundreds of times more than what the public version costs. And how did they do it? Savvy marketing. Water bottle labels evoke images of freshness and purity that you just don’t get from a running tap. Don’t be fooled, though. About a quarter of bottled water actually comes from municipal sources.

White House State Dinner for Mexican President Felipe Calderón

Last week President Obama and the First Lady hosted Mexican President Calderón and Mrs. Margarita Zavala in the White House for a State Dinner. Mrs. Obama worked with Guest Chef Rick Bayless and White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford to create the menu which combined American and Mexican cuisines while highlighting the White House’s commitment to sustainable and regional food.

Coalition Government releases plans for food industry

David Cameron and Nick Clegg today released their programme for the coalition government. Here is how it will affect the food and drink industry

In agriculture, the programme states that “much more needs to be done to support the farming industry, protect biodiversity and encourage sustainable food production”. The programme also states that the government will reduce the regulatory burden on farmers by moving to a risk-based system of regulation, and will develop a system of extra support for hill farmers.
