Perhaps we ate the wrong thing, too much of a good thing or simply too much? Maybe it was a stomach bug, or food poisoning? Or perhaps it’s just age… or nerves.

It’s easy to excuse uncomfortable symptoms like irregularity, cramps, bloating, nausea and heart burn and reach for an over-the-counter product. However, our health and well being relies on our ability to properly digest foods and absorb nutrients, not to mention eliminate wastes.

Calorie counts on menus proposed for restaurant chains

A bill was introduced at Queen’s Park on Wednesday aiming to make eating out a healthier experience.

The private member’s bill from NDP health promotion critic France Gelinas would require major chain restaurants to list calories on their menus to encourage healthy eating across Ontario.

My husband was first told he had high cholesterol at 30 and since then he’s become acutely conscious of his heart health—particularly which foods are heart-healthy. I thought for sure when I pulled together a list of “surprising” foods that promote heart health, he’d look at me and say, “Duh!” Instead he surprised me by raising his eyebrows and smiling (probably because he could now add more foods to his “good for your heart” list). It’s one of the most obvious but overlooked ways Canadians hemorrhage money — lunch hour. (Let’s ignore the irony that I’m writing this at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon, over a $5.50 tuna salad sandwich and a $2 brownie purchased from the company cafeteria.)

We crunched some numbers and figured out, quasi-scientifically, what it costs to buy lunch every day, and how much a hypothetical office-labourer might save by taking 10 minutes each morning to brown-bag it.
