‘Top Chef Masters’ finale redux

“Top Chef Masters” competitors might not be as cutthroat as those on the original “Top Chef,” but the established chefs on the show certainly do convey an important message about food: It’s so much more than competition, pleasure and artistry — it’s an integral part of what defines us as people.

How safe is the food you are eating?

A report comparing Canada’s food safety system with other industrialized nations places the country among the best in the world at protecting the quality of the food supply.

Canada tied for fourth place with the United States, behind Denmark, Australia and the United Kingdom, according to the independent report prepared and paid for by the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, part of the University of Saskatchewan and University of Regina.

When knock-offs outshine the name brand

It’s impossible to create a FoodBozo knock-off. However, it’s possible to create good quality knock-offs when it comes to name-brands;

Generic brands suffer from a stigma. People tend to think those cheaper versions of name-brand products are of lower quality. But for many products, that’s not true, and you’re better off saving money and buying generic. In other cases, though, there really is a quality difference, and it’s worth paying a little more.

In college, when my former classmates and I needed to spend as little as possible, some of us opted for “No Frills” cola, a cheap knock-off of the more popular brand-name soda drinks. This was a pathway to store-brand cola drinks, an acceptable substitute for me as an adult. I’ve since left behind soda in favor of water, but I still shop store brands for some items while finding satisfaction with only name brands for others.
