Though I’ve lived in New York for nearly 10 years, I’m a Midwesterner at heart. I’m proud of my Dayton, Ohio, heritage, even if it requires me to answer asinine questions. “Did you grow up with cows on a farm?” is a common inquiry, one that requires me to point out that the metropolitan area has nearly 1 million residents — of whom very few moo.

My partner Demián and I live in the desert in Baja California Sur, Mexico. This time of year the heat is rising and the humidity is heavy. Two of our favorite ways to cool off is to crank up the blender for frosty libations and to pull out the vintage Tupperware popsicle sets for adult ice pops.

When Maureen Ackerly won the 2008 Napa Valley Marathon, earning a spot at the Olympic Trials, she thanked two people for helping her realize the dream: her husband/coach and the hotel manager at her wine country lodge. Her husband had Fed-Exed Ackerly’s favorite pancake mix in advance to guarantee his wife would have exactly the same prerace meal she’s eaten for years. And the hotel manager agreed to have the kitchen whip up a batch of the cornmeal shortcakes. Yes, Ackerly admits she’s a control freak. But the stakes were high, she says, so sticking to her eating routine was crucial to her efforts.

I’m somehow down to one very old, very scratched plastic cutting board in my kitchen that over time has developed an unfortunate u-shape (which makes it especially hard, and probably dangerous, to cut on). This lame state of affairs has had me thinking it’s time to update my supply—and my maintenance habits.
