Top cereals outed as worse than cookies

December 08, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Kelloggs disputes the report after five of their popular titles rank in the top 10 breakfasts for most sugar.

A bowl of some popular brands of breakfast cereal contains more sugar than three chocolate chip cookies, according to a study released on Wednesday.

A study from the Environmental Working Group, a Washington, D.C.-based health information non-profit, found that one cup of any of 44 children’s breakfast cereals has more sugar than three “Chips Ahoy!” cookies.

The worst cereal for sugar is Kellogg’s Honey Smacks, at nearly 56 percent sugar by weight, according to EWG’s analysis. A one cup serving of Honey Smacks contains more sugar than a Hostess Twinkie, the report found.

106-year-old N.L. woman sustained by pizza, fries

November 08, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

A southern Newfoundland woman who celebrated her 106th birthday this weekend with family and friends is not shy about food choices that are not usually associated with healthy living.

Margaret Ellen Moores was the life of her own party on Saturday in Rushoon where she told four successive generations in her family that God must have plans for her to stick around.

“He put me here, I suppose, and that was it. I had to stay till I went,” Moores said during the party. “I’m after being to the door a few times … He told me to go away, there was no place there for me yet.”

The seven worst foods for your teeth

August 15, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Everyone knows sugar hurts those pearly whites, but so can fruit and vinegar.

Soft Drinks
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, but some foods may be stronger. Here are 7 that can spoil your smile.

Guess what? Sugar isn’t the biggest culprit when it comes to a fizzy drink’s impact on teeth. These beverages — diet or not — strip minerals from tooth enamel because of their high acid content. We’re talking corrosive acids like phosphoric, malic, citric, and tartaric. And the flavor of the fizz matters. They all have an impact, but in a study, clear, citrus-flavored bubbly beverages dissolved enamel two to five times more than colas did.

Food that makes your waistline grow most

July 07, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Eating extra servings of one of these favourites causes the most weight gain over years: study.

Specific foods are associated with long-term weight gain — or weight loss — a major study says.

We’ve heard it before. If you want to lose weight, it comes down to a fairly basic rule: eat less and exercise more. But are there specific foods you should limit or restrict altogether? And how much do exercise and other lifestyle factors really matter when it comes to preventing long-term weight gain?

A recent Harvard study looked at the effect of diet, physical activity and other behaviors on weight gain or loss over a period of several decades. For the study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers followed 120,000 men and women who were considered healthy and non-obese.

Not surprisingly, more people put on weight than lost it over the duration of the study. The average participant gained 3.35 pounds over every four-year period, or more than 16 pounds over two decades.

Easy ways to get rid of bad breath fast

April 20, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

One tip: hold a slice of this veggie in your mouth for 90 seconds to cut down odour quickly.

Water

How it works: Bad breath can occur when the bacteria on your tongue break down the proteins in mucus and food—especially sugar and dairy products—which can cause the bacteria to release sulfur compounds. Result: stinky breath. However, bacteria’s sworn enemy is oxygen, which is found in your own saliva. And drinking water (go with straight water over sugary flavored versions) makes you produce more saliva, which in turn neutralizes bad breath, says Harold Katz, a dentist in Los Angeles and the founder of TheraBreath.com.

Good to know: Some medications, including anti-depressants, blood-pressure drugs, and antihistamines, can cause a dry mouth. If you take them, you may want to increase your water intake beyond the widely recommended eight glasses a day.

The worst ‘free’ restaurant foods

January 21, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

“Bottomless” breadsticks, salads, pancakes, and fries are true diet disasters.

Remember the story of Hansel and Gretel? How the witch of the woods lured them into her edible candy hut and gave them piles and piles of free food—just so she could fatten them up and turn them into stew?

Well, think about that old fairy tale the next time a waiter drops a plate of “free” food on your table. For years I’ve been recommending the best foods to buy, and warning about menu items that might make you fat. But our newest Eat This, Not That! research reveals that some of the worst dietary sins aren’t ordered at all. They just come to your table for free!

The worst burgers in America

June 22, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Ground meat and bun, maybe a slice of cheese. Ideally there’s a pile of produce as well, but if not, so be it. The perfect burger doesn’t benefit from frilly accoutrements. Those “upscale” burger places that insist on embellishing with onion rings, gourmet cheeses, and herb-infused mayonnaise? They’re just showing off, like painting flames on a muscle car. The key to quality is in simplicity, and that’s what the best burgers have in common.
