Eight calorie-burning myths debunked

August 28, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

There’s no such thing as negative-calorie foods, but there’s a reason you should still eat them.

The concept goes something like this: some veggies are so low in calories that they require more energy to digest than they contain. The result? Eating celery, cucumbers or iceberg lettuce can give you a “negative calorie balance.” Sounds great in theory, but “the calories you need for digestion won’t ever exceed the number of calories any type of food contains,” says Los Angeles-based nutritionist LeeAnn Smith Weintraub, RD. However, these non-starchy, low-calorie veggies can still help you lose weight since their fiber and water content will keep you feeling full for longer. So go ahead and pile them on generously when you hit the salad bar for lunch.

4 low-calorie Popsicles for grown-ups

August 14, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Admission: I’m an ice-cream fiend. I love it all year round, but when the weather heats up, those cartons in my freezer really call my name. Mint chocolate chip, mmm. But while it’s delicious, this quintessential summer treat can also be full of fat and calories, especially if, like me, you have trouble stopping at one scoop. Which is why I like to enjoy ice cream as an occasional treat and relish its lower-calorie cousin, popsicles, more frequently. Pops are just as refreshing, yet they’re often significantly lower in fat and calories, especially if you make them yourself, which is easy to do. Plus, a lick on a stick offers built-in portion control—no spooning extra helpings out of the carton!

Low-calorie thirst quenchers

Hot summer temps can make you extra thirsty, but be careful what you slurp—some iced coffee drinks and so-called “healthy” fruit smoothies exceed 500 calories. Gulp! To quench my thirst during the sunny season, I’m careful to drink unsweetened iced tea or coffee, plus lots of water out of my ever-present Sigg bottle. Sometimes plain ol’ H20 gets a little, well, plain. Want to add a little zing? Popping in a few iced-cubes made from fruit juice and frozen berries is a delicious option. However, for a special sip that won’t sink your diet, try one of these simple, low-calorie and seriously delicious swigs below. Bottoms up!
