Top cereals outed as worse than cookies

December 08, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Kelloggs disputes the report after five of their popular titles rank in the top 10 breakfasts for most sugar.

A bowl of some popular brands of breakfast cereal contains more sugar than three chocolate chip cookies, according to a study released on Wednesday.

A study from the Environmental Working Group, a Washington, D.C.-based health information non-profit, found that one cup of any of 44 children’s breakfast cereals has more sugar than three “Chips Ahoy!” cookies.

The worst cereal for sugar is Kellogg’s Honey Smacks, at nearly 56 percent sugar by weight, according to EWG’s analysis. A one cup serving of Honey Smacks contains more sugar than a Hostess Twinkie, the report found.

Cereals that Americans no longer love

June 11, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Consumers are losing their taste for these six well-known breakfast brands.

The average American spends about 13 minutes a day preparing and eating breakfast, the meal nutritionists consider to be the most important of the day, according to NPD Group. Increasingly, people are eating less cold cereal, which has been part of breakfast for more than 100 years.

Sales of ready-to-eat cereals fell 2.55% in the 52 weeks ending April 17 to $6.41 billion, according to data from Symphony/IRI which covers retail outlets such as supermarkets. Sales of cheap, private label cereals dropped 7.2% to $637.5 million during that same time frame. Sales and units shipped have been lackluster since at least 2007, predating the Global Recession and the recent rise in grain prices. This represents a change in fortunes for Kellogg Co. (NYSE: K – News), General Mills Inc. (NYSE: GIS – News) Ralcorp Holdings Inc. (NYSE: RAH – News), parent of Post, and Quaker Oats owner PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE: PEP – News).

Six cereal brands have been hit particularly hard by American’s changing breakfast tastes. These include Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Cheerios, Raisin Bran, Rice Krispies, Corn Pops, and Special K. Sales of some of these brands fell by double digits between 2007 to 2010, and those declines have continued in the most recent period measured by Symphony/IRI.

The best-tasting healthy cereals

August 25, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Call them healthy, call them grown-up; whatever you want to call them, this group of cereals doesn’t include Fruit Loops and Cap’n Crunch. We wanted to find out which were the best-tasting out of the so-called “healthy” cereals sold in national supermarkets. So we compiled a list of thirteen boxes, picked them up along with some milk, and settled in our conference room early on a Monday morning to crunch, much, and scribble on score sheets. Flakes, squares, clusters–all shapes and sizes were included. We also got nutritionist Sandra Frank to weigh in, breaking down which three cereals are the best for you out of the already good-for-you pack.

Worst cereals and the alternatives

April 23, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Let’s face it: We’re rushed. Especially in the morning. Often we’re running out the door a few minutes behind schedule as we stuff our bags and pray that we haven’t left anything behind. (Did I pack my lunch? My gym clothes? Do I have that file I’m supposed to give to Roger? Wait! My pants!) Yeah, mornings are messy, which is why breakfast is so often placed on the back burner. The problem is we sometimes forget to ever turn that burner on.
