Using the Price of Chocolate Bars to Gauge Inflation

Think about how long you have been buying chocolate bars. What was the price then and what’s the price now?

The price of Chocolate bars over time offers a great benchmark for gauging inflation. In the mid 1980’s, I used to pay on average 60₵ per chocolate bar at local convenience stores. Nowadays, I have to fork out about $1. The fact of the matter is many folks are willing to dish out a lot for chocolate.

The Food TimeLine published Hershey’s Price/ Weight Data (1908 to 1986) in the FAQs: historic food prices section.

The “Hershey Bar Index”
Tracking the prices of “regular” candy bars is a complicated project because over the years the definition of regular (ie, size and weight) has also changed. Contrary to popular opinion, the size of the average chocolate bar is not ever-shrinking. The price? Is a function of global trade.
