Five cool health benefits of red peppers

July 06, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

The sweet veggie contains 300 percent of your daily vitamin C intake and can do wonders for your libido.

Red peppers are the belle of the ball at any buffet table. Crisp and incredibly sweet, these ladies in red are an easy sell to anyone who is not fond of vegetables. The only limiting factor is that they can be costly during winter, but now that it’s July, we can look forward to eating more inexpensive local peppers.

Did you know that green peppers are just unripe red peppers? Because they are not fully mature, they have a bitter after taste, and half the vitamin C and 1/10th the vitamin A compared to their red or orange siblings. Vitamin A has been shown to improve sperm quality, and vitamin C helps build collagen, which ensures beautiful skin – all these combined makes peppers one of nature’s sexiest foods!

Paprika and chili peppers offer the same benefits, but with extra capsaicin, a chemical that can produce a strong burning sensation in the mouth. This stimulating heat has been shown to increase blood flow making it a popular remedy for libido and pain relief.

Is Starbucks healthier than McDonald’s?

May 06, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

You’ll be surprised to learn how the coffee chain’s menu compares with the other fast-food giant.

It’s still fast food, any way you cut it

Their bread is artisan, their salads have cranberries but is the food at Starbucks any better for you than McDonald’s fare? The coffee giant just pulled up behind the golden arches to become the number three fast food chain in America. Part of their success is being credited to healthier menu options than the standard drive-through meal. In the case of their carrot sticks and hummus platter, this may be true, but some of their staple grab-and-go menu options are deceptively high in calories and fat. We compared the nutritional values of some of their lunch fare with corresponding offerings at McDonald’s. You’ll be surprised at how the numbers stack up.

The truth about how healthy eggs really are

April 22, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

If you believe yolks are full of cholesterol you’re right — but wrong to think it’s always bad.

Despite popular belief, eggs are actually low in fat, with less than one gram and only 70 calories each. The yolk of an egg contains a considerable amount of cholesterol and lipids, but cholesterol build-up in the arteries actually begins with arterial wall damage. The body’s repair of this eventually leads to a waxy build-up – usually due to sugar and saturated fat, not the consumption of cholesterol itself.

Some studies show that eggs may actually benefit those with high cholesterol, due to their omega fats, protein and antioxidants. Eggs also contain high amounts of lecithin, which blocks the cholesterol in the egg and stops intestinal absorption, keeping it out of the bloodstream.

Five egg-cellent facts
1. Eggs can prevent macular degeneration: Eggs contain the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which prevent free-radical damage to our eyes as we age. These are the same antioxidants that prevent damage to our arteries from the free radicals.
