Which diet tricks work and which don’t

August 31, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Some fads are helpful, some harmful, and some won’t do much either way.

Let’s face it: The rules of weight loss—eat less, move more, treats in moderation— are a drag. And they don’t fit with most dieters’ quick-fix, thinner-by-dinner expectations. Cue diet crutches: tricks, based on scant science, that may speed up results. So if a friend swears that munching on grapefruit gets her into skinny jeans, or a coworker credits ice water for his sleek physique, should you try it too?

Not so fast. Some diet crutches are helpful, some harmful, and some won’t do much either way. We asked registered dietitians for the bottom line (“skip it,” “try it,” or “do it right”) on the most common diet crutches.

6 things that end up costing a fortune

February 07, 2011 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

You’ll be horrified at what a $4 daily coffee habit adds up to over 30 years.

We all do it. We spend little amounts regularly on things like lunch, Starbucks lattes, manicures, golf — maybe even for having a pizza delivered while you watch a weekly game on TV.

These seem like reasonable decisions about relatively small expenses. It’s hard to imagine how much they add up.

The harsh reality is that each dollar that’s spent today isn’t available for something else tomorrow. And these little purchases have a way of robbing us of the things we really want.

Real cost of eating lunch at work every day

December 08, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

I’m what you would call frugally motivated. As a working single parent I have to manage my expenses on a tight budget. I’ve learned to look at food as a necessity not a luxury.

Since mastering this ideology I’ve managed to close the big black hole where my money used to get sucked into. It was relatively easy to adapt. I was already taking the time to pack a lunch for my son. I just had to pick up some extra groceries to have on hand. These days I’m making my own food 95% of the time. I’m eating fresh quality food that’s prepared healthy and tailored to my tastes. For a little extra effort I eat much better than my colleagues that opt to buy lunches. And at the end of the month my costs are negligible compared to theirs.

September 28, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

As the economy tanked during the past two years, a debate has raged over whether immigrants are taking jobs that Americans want. Here, amid the sweltering vineyards of the largest farm state, the answer is no.

Most Americans simply don’t apply for jobs harvesting fruits and vegetables in California, where one of every eight people is out of work, according to government data for a federal seasonal farmworker program analyzed by The Associated Press.

How to eat right when you’re at work

April 27, 2010 By: bozobouffe Category: Uncategorized

Other than getting a good night’s sleep, there’s probably no other thing that impacts your productivity and mood at work more than what you eat. Yet you probably give little thought to what you consume before and during work, defaulting instead to what’s convenient, cheap, and tasty. And when you do think twice about what you eat, it’s usually in the context of a diet that’s focused on losing weight rather than improving your cognitive functioning and energy levels. Fortunately, there are a few basic food rules that go a long way towards achieving these latter goals. Here are the best of them.
