We love the holidays, but we know they can be a nutritional minefield. Temptations lurk everywhere. Those extra calories add up to an average weight gain of about a pound during the festivities between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, studies show. That may not sound like much, but if it becomes a yearly tradition, the years can pack on the pounds.

The worst fast-food meals in America

As a kid growing up in the early ’80s, I made every mistake in the book. I ate fast food instead of smart food. I played video games when I should’ve been playing outside. By the time I reached age 14, I was carrying 212 pounds on a 5’10″ frame. (I wanted to be built like a basketball player, but instead was shaped more like a basketball.)

Best, worst summer BBQ foods

Last July 4, Joey Chestnut earned his third consecutive victory in Coney Island’s Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest—the gustatory champ downed 68 hot dogs in 10 minutes. That jaw-dropping stat is made scarier still when you realize that Chestnut consumed over 20,000 calories in that time. That’s a whole day’s worth of calories … per minute.

The worst burgers in America

Ground meat and bun, maybe a slice of cheese. Ideally there’s a pile of produce as well, but if not, so be it. The perfect burger doesn’t benefit from frilly accoutrements. Those “upscale” burger places that insist on embellishing with onion rings, gourmet cheeses, and herb-infused mayonnaise? They’re just showing off, like painting flames on a muscle car. The key to quality is in simplicity, and that’s what the best burgers have in common.

Best and worst ‘healthy’ drinks

Whoever invented bottled water was a genius. Think about it: They took a widely available and nearly free commodity, packaged it nice and pretty, and sold it for hundreds of times more than what the public version costs. And how did they do it? Savvy marketing. Water bottle labels evoke images of freshness and purity that you just don’t get from a running tap. Don’t be fooled, though. About a quarter of bottled water actually comes from municipal sources.
